Edward Durell Stone was an American architect who attended the University of Arkansas, Harvard, and MIT, but did not complete any of them. In 1927, he received a two-year traveling grant, which he spent in Europe, where he was influenced by functionalism. In 1929, he returned to the USA, settled in Manhattan, and began working at the architectural firm Schultze & Weaver, where he contributed to the interiors of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, participated in the design of Rockefeller Center, and was the lead architect of Radio City Music Hall. In the 1930s, he became independent and designed private residences, public buildings, and multinational corporations in the functionalist style.
